The Wellington Hospital is one of the largest private hospitals in the UK with a campus of buildings located in the St John’s Wood area, close to Regent’s Park and Lord’s Cricket Ground. Being at the forefront of medical treatment for almost 50 years, patients from all over the world come to The Wellington Hospital every year for access to more than 800 specialists, many of whom are recognised as leaders in their field.

Facilities and Services

The Wellington Hospital has two main hospital buildings and four outpatient buildings for diagnosis, screening and general medical care, including an Urgent Care Centre. It is especially well known for its Acute Neurological Rehabilitation Centre and has the widest range of neuroscience services in the private sector.

Among many other specialties, the hospital caters to the full range of orthopaedic sub-specialties, cardiac and cancer care, digestive diseases, women’s health and general medicine.

Main facilities

The hospital has two main inpatient sites catering to a wide range of specialties. The facilities include 224 private beds, 14-day case beds, 30 intensive care unit beds, 12 operating theatres, 46 Neurological rehabilitation beds, an acute admissions unit, a JAG accredited endoscopy suite (JAG accredited May 2021), an outpatient physiotherapy gym, pharmacy, hydrotherapy pool and the full range of diagnostic imaging services.

A multispecialty hospital with over 800 consultant physicians and surgeons

With over 800 consultants, The Wellington Hospital is truly comprehensive in what it can offer - especially at the complex end of care having the largest private Intensive Care Unit in the country. The hospital sees over 30,000 patients a year and was the first to set up private post Covid recovery services, including inpatient rehabilitation.

Dedicated orthopaedic units

Orthopaedics take place in dedicated units for knee, hip, foot and ankle, hand and wrist, spine, shoulder and elbow, peripheral nerve and sports medicine. The north building is also home to a dedicated cardiac services centres providing the complete range of cardiac diagnostics and treatment.

The hospital's facilities include the Mako® Robotic Arm-Assisted System for hip and knee replacement, a da Vinci Robotic® Surgical System for minimally invasive surgery, and it boasts three large outpatient and diagnostic centres in North London: Platinum Medical Centre in St John’s Wood, and consulting, imaging, and treatment rooms in Golders Green and Elstree.

Hospital regulator ratings

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) awarded The Wellington Hospital a 'Good' rating across the board (Report published February 2017).

Surgical Outcomes

According to the National Joint Register (NJR, which reports on NHS and private joint replacements in the UK, except Scotland), The Wellington Hospital performs a reasonable volume of hip replacements for the private sector and exceeds the average ankle replacement hospital volume in the UK by more than 100%. Approximately 20% of its joint replacements were total knee replacements. (NJR data is to March 2020.)
